Jews of Libya in European Travelers Writings: 1811 -1911

Abstract

During the period between 1811 - 1911, Libya witnessed the arrival of a number of European travelers, as part of an exploratory movement, some of which targeted the country itself and others aimed to cross to Central Africa, These travelers were not satisfied with merely watching;  Rather, they recorded their observations in their books and reports, which became part of the sources of modern Libyan history, The Jewish component in Libya received the attention of most European travelers, whether in terms of their population and areas of presence, or in terms of their relationship with authority and society, as well as their economic activity, and their social, cultural, and religious life.
