Plagiarism policy

Commitment to Academic Integrity

The Journal of Strategic and Military Studies (JSMS) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity, scientific originality, and ethical scholarly publishing.

The journal strictly condemns all forms of plagiarism, including the unauthorized reproduction, appropriation, or presentation of another person's ideas, words, research findings, data, or intellectual contributions as one's own without appropriate acknowledgment.

In accordance with internationally recognized principles of publication ethics and the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), JSMS seeks to ensure that all published research meets the requirements of originality, transparency, intellectual honesty, and proper scholarly attribution.

Plagiarism Screening and Detection

All manuscripts submitted to the Journal of Strategic and Military Studies undergo plagiarism screening using iThenticate or other appropriate similarity-detection software before being submitted for external peer review.

This procedure is intended to identify potential textual overlap with previously published scientific works, including cases of plagiarism, inappropriate paraphrasing, unattributed quotations, and self-plagiarism.

Similarity reports are carefully examined by the editorial team, which evaluates the nature, extent, and context of any identified overlap. A similarity percentage alone does not constitute conclusive evidence of plagiarism; editorial decisions are based on a qualitative assessment of the relevant material and its compliance with accepted standards of academic integrity.

Forms of Plagiarism

The journal considers the following practices unacceptable:

  • Direct plagiarism: Reproducing text, ideas, or research findings from another source without proper citation or acknowledgment.

  • Self-plagiarism: Reusing substantial portions of one's own previously published work without appropriate disclosure, citation, or justification.

  • Paraphrasing plagiarism: Rewriting or modifying another author's work without properly acknowledging the original source.

  • Mosaic plagiarism: Combining passages, expressions, or ideas from multiple sources without adequate attribution.

  • Data and visual plagiarism: Using research data, tables, figures, illustrations, maps, or other intellectual materials without proper acknowledgment or necessary authorization.

  • Duplicate or redundant publication: Submitting or publishing substantially the same research in more than one journal without appropriate disclosure and editorial authorization.

Authors' Responsibilities

Authors submitting manuscripts to JSMS must ensure that their work is original and that all sources, quotations, paraphrases, data, and intellectual contributions are accurately cited and appropriately attributed in accordance with the journal's referencing requirements.

Authors must also ensure that their manuscripts have not been previously published or simultaneously submitted to another journal for consideration.

All authors share responsibility for the originality, accuracy, and ethical integrity of the submitted manuscript.

Editorial Procedures and Consequences

Manuscripts displaying excessive similarity, suspected plagiarism, or other serious violations of academic integrity are examined by the editorial board.

Depending on the nature and severity of the identified concerns, the journal may:

  • Request clarification or corrections from the author(s);

  • Require substantial revisions and proper acknowledgment of sources;

  • Reject the manuscript before external peer review;

  • Suspend consideration of the manuscript pending an ethical investigation;

  • Withdraw or retract a published article when plagiarism or serious research misconduct is substantiated;

  • Take other appropriate measures in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies and applicable COPE guidance.

Authors are given an appropriate opportunity to respond to substantiated allegations before a final decision is made.

Final Statement

The Journal of Strategic and Military Studies regards originality, proper attribution, and scientific integrity as fundamental principles of scholarly communication.

Through systematic plagiarism screening and responsible editorial oversight, JSMS seeks to protect authors' intellectual property rights, preserve the credibility of published research, and promote ethical academic publishing in strategic and military studies and related disciplines.
